Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a credit dispute take?

Credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate disputes (45 days if you submit additional information). Most disputes are resolved in 2–3 weeks. You'll receive written results once the investigation concludes.

Can I dispute a credit report online or by mail?

You can dispute online via each bureau's website, by certified mail (recommended for a paper trail), or by phone. Certified mail is best for serious disputes because you have proof of receipt and timing.

What happens if a bureau doesn't respond to my dispute?

If a bureau fails to respond within 30 days, the disputed item must be removed. Keep copies of your dispute letter and the certified mail receipt as proof of your submission date.

Can I dispute accurate negative information?

No — disputes are for inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information. Attempting to dispute accurate negative items is called 'frivolous disputing' and bureaus can reject such disputes.

What is a goodwill deletion letter?

A goodwill deletion letter asks a creditor to remove an accurate late payment as a courtesy, typically citing your long account history, the isolated nature of the incident, and financial hardship. It's not guaranteed but effective for longstanding customers.
